The liberty to go wherever you want to17-12-2009 -
The thirty human rights, translated to thirty pieces of art. This is the exhibition Thirty Somethings, in which Belgian artists’ collective Article 27 asked thirty artists to cooperate. Mark Swysen is one of them. His sculpture was inspired by the 13th article: the right to migration. “In the AINSI is a ‘dead’ staircase; it goes towards the ceiling. I placed a piece of marble at the bottom of those stairs. From far away it looks like an altar, but when you look more closely you can see that there are plates on it, so it could also be a table. On the stairs I placed little shoes. People immigrate for various reasons. Some have a spiritual goal; they can’t express their beliefs in their own country. Others lack banal things like food and housing.”
